Doughnuts (Nanny Nelson's) Aunt Hilda Nelson
4 cups flour 4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 cup melted shortening, cooled 1 cup sugar
In a large bowl, alternately stir in flour mixture and buttermilk mixture. Chill in refrigerator to room temperature or cooler. Roll out and fry in hot shortening. For orange doughnuts omit nutmeg. Decrease buttermilk to 1/2 cup and add 1/2 cup orange juice. For applesauce doughnuts, add 1/2 tsp. cinnamon with the nutmeg. Decrease buttermilk to 2/3 cup and add 1/2 cup applesauce.
