Sour Cream Apple Squares                        Jan Peterson

2 cups flour                        2 cups brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup margarine softened                        1 cup chopped nuts

1/2 tsp. cinnamon                        1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt                        1 cup sour cream

1 tsp. vanilla                        1 egg

2 cups chopped peeled apples

 

Heat oven to 350.  Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.  In large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and margarine; blend at low speed until crumbly.  Stir in nuts.  Press 2 3/4 cups of crumb mixture into ungreased 13 x 9" pan.   To remaining mixture, add cinnamon, baking soda, salt, sour cream, vanilla and egg; blend well.  Stir in apples.  Spoon evenly over base.  Bake at 350 for 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.  Cut into squares.  If desired, serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
